Sarcophagi from Sidon

These sarcophagi are the most valuable possessions of the Museum. They were discovered by Osman Hamdi Bey in the Royal Necropolis at Sidon (present day Lebanon)

The Alexander Sarcophagus

This sarcophagus is so named not because it contained Alexander the Great's remains but because of  its  bas-reliefs depicting Alexander battling the Persians.

The Mourning Women Sarcophagus
The bas-reliefs show 18 women in the state of mourning

The Lycian Sarcophagus

So named because of its resemblance to the sarcophagi from the Lycian region. It depicts the Battle of the Centaurs and Lipiths

Sarcophagus of Sidamara

The Satrao Sarcophagus
