To the ancient Greeks, Delphi was the centre of the world : Zeus released 2 eagles in the opposite direction. They flew round the world then collided and fell to the ground in Delphi. The site was marked by the sacred Omphalos Stone. The ruins of the temples visible today date from the 4th century BC.
