National Archaeological Museum

The museum has an imposing neo-classical design and first opened in 1891.It was closed during the Second World War and its collection dispersed and buried underground for protection. The museum was re-opened in 1946





Artemision Bronze
Recovered from the sea off Cape Artemision. It is either Zeus or Poseidon brandishing a missing thunderbolt or trident



Grave Stele of Hegeso
Found in Kerameikos, belonging to Koroibos of  Melite. It shows his wife, Hegeso, admiring her jewels with a servant and dates from the 5th century BC



The Horse with the Little Jockey
Recovered from the sea off Cape Artemision. This bronze sculpture was created in the 2nd century



Aphrodite and Pan
This marble sculpture was found in Delos and dates from 100 BC



Antikythira Ephebe
Found off the island of Antikythira in 1900. Dated by its style to about 340 BC



The Marathon Boy
Found in the Aegean Sea in the Bay of Marathon in 1925.
