The Yerebatan Cistern

Built by Emperor Justinian in AD 532. It was used to store water for the Great Palace and the surrounding buildings. The 336 columns here are either made of marble or granite.

Column with teardrop design

Two of the columns have the head of Medusa as their base. One of the Medusa heads is inverted and the other is sideways. The idea behind such a positioning and the source of the Medusa heads are unknown.

This cistern was used as a location for the 1963 James Bond film, From Russia With Love
