Going up to Orvieto

Orvieto is situated on a 300 m high plateau. We took the funicular to the top.

Hotel Royal Court

We chose this hotel because it is near the Roma Termini station. We stayed here for two nights before leaving for Sorrento and one more night after coming back from Sorrento

Breakfast in the hotel

We had the room to ourselves

We walked around Trastevere before having dinner here.

Our first dinner in Pasta Land was, of course,  pasta

Fettuccine Bolognese

Spaghetti Carbonara

We then took a taxi back to the hotel

Santa Maria in Trastevere

This church was probably the first Christian place of worship in Rome founded in the 3rd Century. The church was rebuilt in the 12th Century by Pope Innocent II.

Santa Maria degli Angeli : The Facade

This church was built inside the Roman walls of the Baths of Diocletian. It was designed by Michelangelo but he died one year after the work began in 1563.

No one will expect to find a beautiful church behind these walls

The bronze door

Santa Susanna

Santa Susanna (which is next to Santa Maria della Vittoria and opposite Santa Bernardo alle Terme) was not open that day.

Santa Bernardo alle Terme

This church is just opposite Santa Maria della Vittoria. It was built in 1598 and is very similar to Pantheon with a dome and an oculus.

 The Ecstasy of St Bernard
where he had a vision of Christ descending from the cross to embrace him.
