The Windmills

Mykonos is a very windy island; so much so that windmills became essential features of the island's landscape. They were used to grind the agricultural produce of the island

They were built by the Venetians in the 16th century

These windmills are no longer operational

This row of windmills is the landmark of Mykonos

The Catholic Church of Panagia Rodario

This is the only Catholic church in Mykonos.

Completed in 1668

The icon of Virgin Mary and Infant Jesus between St Dominicus and St Catherine of Sienna came from Venice in 1715

Luckily it was open that day

This is one of the few churches in town which is open to the public

Panagia Paraportiani

This is the most famous church in Mykonos. It consists of 5 churches built between the 15th and 17th century

Sadly it was closed each time we were there

Petros the Pelican

Petros was the mascot of Mykonos until his death in 1954.

We saw the Chef feeding the pelican while we were having lunch in the restaurant

Today there are 3 pelicans on the island succeeding him

Agios Nikolakis Church

This cute little blue domed church sits on the shore of  Chora

Chora, Mykonos

Chora is the largest town in Mykonos. It is also known as Mykonos following the Greek tradition of referring to  the principal town of an island as the name of the island itself .

At the old port

We started our walk from the old port and all the way along the seashore towards the windmills

Mykonos

The island of Mykonos lies in the Aegean Sea, about 160 km south east of Athens. It is a small island with its maximum length and width of 15 km and 10 km respectively

Mykonos is famous for its pristine sandy beaches, vibrant night life and great restaurants. The island's white cube shaped houses with flat roofs  are the finest examples of  Cycladic architecture.

Piraeus - Syros - Tinos - Mykonos

The journey took 5 hours and 15 minutes. But it did not seem that long as we were able to enjoy the views on the deck, eat and catch up on our  sleep
