Temple of Horus

The Temple of Horus at Edfu was buried under sand and silt for nearly two thousand years. Construction of the temple began under Ptolemy III in 237 BC and continued up to the time of Ptolemy XII in 53 BC. It is actually a replica of a 2000 years architecture that was already archaic during Ptolemaic times.

The first pylon is decorated with Pharaonicscenes of Ptolemy XII defeating his enemies in front of Horus and Hathor.

Two statues of Horus flank the entrance to the pylon.

The great court.

A second set of the statues of Horus once flanked the temple but only one remains today.

Many reliefs were vandalised by the Christians.

Several chapels with excellent reliefs surround the sanctuary.

Horus' sacred barque.

The Passage of Victory.

Thereafter we continue our cruise to Kom Ombo
