Deir al Medina

Deir al Medina is also known as the Workmen's Village. The craftmen, artists and labourers who worked on the royal tombs lived here. This village can be traced by to the time of Thotmosis I in 1505 BC and lasted until Ramses XI in 1073 BC. The tombs here are unique in that they do not belong to the royals or high ranking officials but the workmen themselves. The workmen will work on their own tombs during their off days. Only 4 tombs are open to the public here.
