San Lorenzo was the parish church of the Medici family. Many members of the Medici family were buried here. It was extensively rebuilt by the Medici in 14th century,

Cosimo was buried in the sarcophagus which also serves as a pillar. This is to signify his role as the "pillar" of the family and the church.
