Trafalgar Square

This square commemorates the victory of the British navy at the Battle of Trafalgar against the French and Spanish navies in 1805 during the Napoleonic Wars. Nelson's Column now stands in the centre of the square honours Admiral Lord Nelson who led the fleet's victory.

The square first opened to the public in 1844

The Fountain
The original intention of building the fountain was not for its aesthetic value but rather to reduce the open space available and the risk of riotous assembly

The smallest police station in England and possibly in the world

Nelson's Column

4 bronze lions flank the column

The square was once famous for its pigeons and feeding them was a popular activity. Now it is banned by law
