May I introduce King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Bavaria was an independent state then and was not part of Germany. He is still a popular king in Bavaria. He was born in 1845 and died in 1886. He spent most of his childhood in Hohenschwangau Castle. He ascended the throne in 1864 at the age of 18.
King Ludwig II gradually withdrew from the affairs of the state in favour of building lavish palaces such as Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof Palace and Herrenchiemsee Palace. He also renovated and extended the existing palaces. He spent all his royal revenues on the projects and borrowed extensively. All the projects were opposed by his cabinet and he has threatened to dismiss them. This has led the cabinet to declare him insane by reason of his extravagance spending. He was found dead together with his doctor the next day. His death was ruled to be suicide but I think obviously he was murdered.
