Avignon lies in the heart of Provence. Seven successive Popes resided in Avignon during the Avignon Papacy between 1309 to 1376. Pope Clement VI bought the town and built a wall surrounding it. The papal lost the town during the French Revolution and Avignon became part of France. The city wall is well preserved today. The historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site in 1995
We began our walk to the old town after checking into our hotel. The town seemed deserted since it was a Sunday. Most shops are cloosed except the restaurants.
Our favourite Carrefour in Avignon which we visited everyday

Our hotel is beside the Avignon Centre train station just outside the city wall. We walked up and down the main street Rue de la Republique everyday. The distance from the southern gate in front of the train station to Pont St Benezet is about 1.2 km.
