The crypt has five long burial vaults containing the mummified remains of many of Dublin’s most influential families from 1600 to 1800. Their bodies barely decomposed because of the dry atmosphere created by the limestone wall. The crypt was vandalised in 1996 and 2019. A man set fire to the crypt in June 2024 destroying a 800-year-old crusader and a 400-year-old nun. The crypt was then closed. Luckily, it reopened when we were in Dublin.
