A castle was first built here in 1385. It has been extensively rebuilt and extended by the owners from the House of Wittelsbach. This palace reflects the status of its owners who have governed Bavaria as dukes, electors and kings from 1508 to 1918. It was opened to the public as a museum in 1920.
