Oudegracht

The Oudegracht (old canal) flows through the centre of Utrecht. The water level became constant when the city's locks system was completed in 1275. It enabled the creation of dry cellars below street level which is unique in Holland. Warehouses used to line the canal and many have been converted to restaurants and cafes today.

The canal is lined with the unique wharf-basement that create a two-level street along the canal.

Holland has the highest number of bicycles per capita
