The Prime Meridian that divides the world into Western and Eastern Hemisphere passes through here. Every place on Earth is measured in terms of its distance east or west from this line.

The Prime Meridian at Greenwich also serves as the reference line for Greenwich Mean Time. For example, Malaysia is 8 hours ahead of Greenwich i.e GMT + 8. So if the time in London is 1.00 pm then the time in Malaysia will be 9.00 pm (+ 8 hours)
