The Dead Sea

The Dead Sea, which is actually a lake, lies between Israel and Jordan. It is the lowest point on land at 411m below sea level.

Why is the Dead Sea so salty?

The minerals that flow into the Dead Sea stay there because there is no outlet. This together with the high rate of evaporation increased the mineral content of the water.

Across the sea is Israel

Because of its extremely high content of minerals, the Dead Sea is devoid of plant and animal life.
