This site is associated with the Biblical characters of Lot and his family who escaped from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.
Lot was instructed by Yahweh to neither stop in the plain or look back. "But the wife of Lot looked behind her, and she became a pillar of salt" (Genesis 19:26).
