Once we reached a check point in Minya, the police started to escort us. They followed us to the restaurant and then the hotel. We were not allowed to leave the hotel at night.

This area has long been associated with religious extremists. In the late 1970s and early 1990s there were many attacks on tourists. The police will insist on accompanying tourists everywhere. It did not bother us as we know it was for our safety and they always kept their distance. They will follow behind our car and at the sites they will just walk behind us.
