There has been a church dedicated to St Michael on the site of this cathedral since 11th century. The relics of St Gudula were later housed here. Construction of this church began in 1225 and continued for a period of 300 years.
This is the primary cathedral in Belgium where all the royal weddings and funerals are held here.
