The Flaming Mountains are so named because the mountains look like they are on fire under the sun.
"Huoyan Shan"
Huoyan Shan was made famous in the Chinese Classic Journey To The West. Xuanzang and his disciples (including the Monkey God) travelled to the West and these mountains were one of formidable barriers that they had to cross.
