This 1st Century BC Treasury is the best known of all the monuments in Petra. The Treasury is known as Khashneh el-Faroun (Treasury of the Pharoah) in Arabic following a myth that a Pharoah has hidden his treasures here.

The purpose of the Treasury remains a mystery; except that it was not a treasury. It could have been a royal tomb, a temple or a mausoleum.
