The forum was the business centre of Rome. In the 2nd century BC it expanded to include the Senate House and the law courts and remained the ceremonial centre of the city under the empire.

Either before or after your visit to the forum, you should make a trip to the Capitoline Hill above. From there you can make out how it once was.
