The Sistine Chapel

No visit to the Vatican Museum (and even Rome) is complete without seeing the Sistine Chapel. This is where the Pope is elected for life by the College of Cardinals in a secret ballot during a conclave in the Sistine Chapel. No one is allowed to leave the chapel until a pope is elected. White smoke from the chimney of the chapel will indicate that a pope has been elected

The work from two periods of Michelangelo's life is reflected in the Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo's frescoed the ceiling between 1508 and 1512. He worked on the Last Judgment alone for seven years until its completion in 1541. The Last Judgment is considered to be the masterpiece of Michelangelo's mature years.

Sadly no photography is allowed here.
