Emperor Qianlong ordered the construction this street upon his return from Jiangnan. It was modelled after a commercial street in Suzhou.
We had wanted to take the boat back to the South Lake Island then exit throught the New Palace Gate in the south. Unfortunately, the Suzhou Street was closed for maintenance. Since we have taken the boat ride on our first visit, we were not keen to walk back and decided to leave the Summer Palace by the North Palace Gate.
