It was home to the concubines of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. When both Emperor Wanli and his Empress Wang palaces were destroyed by fire, they moved into the palace together. They spent 24 years here before Empress Wang passed away. It was converted into an opera hall by Empress Dowager Cixi.
