This palace was built by Emperor Qianlong for his retirement. He did not wish to rule longer than his grandfather Emperor Kangxi which is 61 years and 318 days. He supposedly abdicated after 60 years and 124 days and appointed Emperor Jiaqing his successor. However, he continued to rule behind the scene until his death making his actual reign lasting 63 years and 122 days. In doing so Qianlong did not move into this palace.
