Londonderry, in the County of Londonderry, is the second largest city in Northern Ireland. Despite the official name, the city is commonly known as Derry, especially to the Nationalsts for obvious reasons. On 29 March 1613 King James I granted a Charter which provided "...that the said city or town of Derry, for ever hereafter be and shall be named and called the city of Londonderry…" The Nationalist majority City Council changed the name to Derry unilaterally. However, in Derry City Council, Re Application for Judicial Review [2007] NIQB 5 the High Court held that Londonderry remained the official name and that the correct procedure to change the name would be via a petition to the Privy Council. This decision put the council in a difficult position. First, they have to respect the decision of the High Court. Secondly, by applying would imply the recognition of British Sovereignty over Northern Ireland. Nothing was done and the name Londonderry remains.
