Robert Gerard Sands (1954-1981) was a member of the IRA. During his second imprisonment, the British government removed the term political prisoner yet continued to rely on closed hearings, secret evidence, and extended detention without charges in order to gain convictions against suspected IRA members. Sands started a hunger strike in protest. He won the parliamentary seat of Fermanagh and South Tyrone in the 1981 by-election while in prison. Sands died less than a month later at the age of 27, without ever having taken his seat in the Commons. The reported cause of death as "self-imposed starvation" was amemnded to simple starvation following protests.
