Burren means rocky land in Gaelic. It is a vast limestone plateau in County Clare "where there is not water enough to drown a man, wood enough to hang one, nor earth enough to bury him." This quote is attributed to Oliver Cromwell when asked why he didn't invade Burren. This area is unique in that Alpine and Mediterranean plants rare to Ireland grow side by side. The Burren together with the Cliffs of Moher have been listed as UNESCO Global Geopark
