Yungang Grottoes is16 km to the west of Datong. It was built in 460 during the Northern Wei Dynasty (368 – 534). The carvings lasted more than 60 years until they moved their capital to Luoyang and started the Longmen Grottoes there. It has 252 caves and niches and about 51,000 statues. The biggest being 17 m tall and the smallest being just 2 cm. It was named a World Heritage Site for being a "masterpiece of early Chinese Buddhist cave art"
