This wooden pagoda is located in the Yingxian County about 70 km from Datong. It is 63 m tall and is the world's tallest wooden pagoda. It was constructed in 1056 during the Liao Dynasty and is still standing today after more than 960 years. It was built without any nails. Instead, 54 different dougong (bracket) were used in the construction of this pagoda. The dougong is held together by the friction of each joint and the weight of the vertical load. Its ability to withstand compression and distortion has enabled the pagoda to survive numerous earthquakes and remains as the oldest wooden pagoda still standing in the world.
