Caves No.16 to No.20 are also known as Tan Yao Caves (昙曜五窟), which were constructed under the command of the famous monk Tan Yao. The five caves are the earliest caves of Yungang Grottoes, built from 460-470. Every cave has a giant Buddha statue to represent the five emperors of Northern Wei Dynasty.
