The Rosetta Stone

Egyptian Hieroglyphics are the world's oldest known writing system. Unfortunately, the ability to read the hieroglyphic inscriptions has been lost.

It was this black granite stele, discovered in 1799 in Rosetta by Napoleon's army which held the key to deciphering the Hieroglyphs. It contains a decree from the Ptolemaic era (332 BC) in 3 languages: Hieroglyphic, Demotic Egyptian and Ancient Greek. This has enabled Champollion to decipher the hieroglyphics and thus earning him the name, the Father of Egyptology.
