Piccadilly Circus

The name 'Piccadilly' originates from the word piccadil, a 17th century frilled collar worn by men. Circus in England (from Latin) also means an open circular place where several streets intersect. This place is always so crowded and hence has given its name to the phrase it's like Piccadilly Circus.

The statue of Anteros was erected in 1892 as a memorial to the Earl of Shaftesbury.
He has often been mistaken as the Greek God of Love Eros because of the bow he is holding

The world's most expensive advertising hoarding

Coca Cola has advertised on the hoarding since 1955, the longest continuous presence at Piccadilly Circus. Hyundai has just replaced Sanyo, costing the company about £2 Million a year. The price is a record for one of the world’s most valuable advertising hoardings, and reflects how rarely the 100-year-old space come to the open market. This is one of the most photographed sites in the world and seen by more than 34 million people a year.
