Emperor Shah Jahan built this fort in 1639 when he moved his capital from Agra to Delhi. The fort has since been the residence of the Mughal emperors for 200 years. It is now a World Heritage Site
The red sandstones that were used to build the fort also gave the fort its name Lal (Red) Qila (Fort)
