The Kumbum Stupa was built by a Gyantse prince in 1497. It is the tallest stupa and the only stupa of its kind in Tibet. It has nine tiers and each tier has its own unique chapels decorated with wall paintings, statues of Buddha and deities. There are 76 chapels in total. The number of chapels decreases as we climbed higher.
