The monastery is located in Gyantse in the Shigatse Prefecture in western Tibet. It is unique in Tibet in that it houses three separate schools of Tibetan Buddhism under its roofs - Sakyapa, Gelugpa, and Kadampa. Its architecture is also unique as it is a combination of Chinese Han, Tibetan, and Nepali architecture. The origin of the monastery can be traced back to the 9th century but the current buildings were built between 1418-1428.
