Oberammergau is famous for its passion plays. The Thirty Years War (1618-48) and the plague of 1632 nearly wiped out the entire population of the village. The surviving villagers pledged that should they survived, they would stage a play about Christ's Passion perpetually. So every ten years the villagers take part in performing the plays between May and October.
