The Step Pyramid was built in the 27th century BC by Djoser (Old Kingdom). Imhotep, his architect, has made an unprecedented leap in Egyptian architecture by using hewn stones. Previously, royal tombs were underground rooms topped with mud brick mastabas. He built not one mastaba but six, a smaller one on top another. And that was the precursor to pyramid building.
