The Serapeum consists of a series of passageways lined with side chambers. It is the burial place of the sacred Apis bulls that were associated with the god Ptah. It has 25 giant granite sarcophagi. The tomb was in use from the time of Amenhotep III in the New Kingdom through to the Ptolemaic Period in 30 BC.
