Hofkirche is a Gothic-Renaissance church built by Emperor Ferdinand in 1553 as a memorial to his grandfather Emperor Maximilian I (Maximilian's tomb remained in Wiener Neustadt because his will had directed that he be buried there). The church is often called the “Black Men Church” (Schwarzmanderkirche) because of the 28 larger than life bronze statues inside.
