This Graeco-Roman temple was built in honour of the ram-headed god Khnum. Construction of the temple was began by Ptolemy VI (180-45BC) and the hypostyle hall wass completed by the Roman. Repeated flooding by the Nile has buried the temple under layers of silt and mud and the modern town of Esna was built on top of it. Excavation works began in 1860s to uncover the temple.
The temple is 10 m below street level
