Construction of the temple began in the Middle Kingdom. Pharaoh after pharaoh added their mark on the most important temple in all Egypt during the height of the Theban power. It was known as "the Most perfect of Places". The temple was buried under sand for more than 1000 years before excavation works began in the 19th century. It is now a World Heritage Site.
The site measures 1.5 km x 800 m
