Akhenaten and his queen Nefertiti established a new city and a new religion here in Upper Egypt in the 14th century BC. They began to worship Aten, the god of the sun disc and abandoned the other gods, temples and priests at Thebes (now Luxor). This place was known as Akhetaten and served as the capital for 14 years.
This place was abandoned after Akhenaten's death
His successor Tutankhamun relocated back to Thebes and restored the worship of traditional gods. Thus bringing to an end the Amarna Period
All that remains today
