Officially. it is known as Cathedral of the Intercession as it was built by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan and completed in 1561.
The design comprises of eight individual chapels, each topped with a unique onion dome, surrrounding the Church of Intercession. A tenth chapel dedicatedd to St Basil was added to the structure directly above his tomb and since then it has been called the Cathedral of St Basil the Blessed.

According to legend, Ivan the Terrible was so amazed at the beauty of this church that he blinded the architect (Postnik Yakovlev) so that he would never be able to build anything to rival the beauty of this church.
