According to the Bible, Jesus asked St John to look after his mother, Mary. John brought Mary with him to Ephesus in AD 37 and she spent the last years of her life here.
The House of the Blessed Virgin is located at Meryemana, 8 km from the centre Euphesus and became a place of pilgrimage for both christians and muslims.
To the muslims, Mary is Meryemana, mother of Prophet Isa
People believing in the sanctity of the Virgin Mary come and drink from a spring running under the house which is believed to have healing properties.
