Lugano to Locarno

We came down from Monte San Salvatore and walked to the nearby Lugano Paradiso train station. Our next destination was Locarno.

Church of San Salvatore

This church was completed in 1722. It was built on the site where the earlier church was demolished. It became a pilgrimage church which led to the building of the funicular in 1890.








Monte San Salvatore

Monte San Salvadore stands beside Lake Lugano. Its highest point is at 912m. We have to walk uphill from the station to the viewing terrace and the church.

Monte San Salvatore funicular

This railway began operation in 1890. It has a length of 1660m and is divided into two equal sections with different gradients. The first section has a gradient of 37% and the second 61%.

We took  the bus in front of the station to Paradiso.

We arrived in Paradiso and walked to the funicular station

We walked down from the cathedral and took the funicular up again to the train station.

Cathedral di San Lorenzo

This cathedral is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to St Lawrence. It was founded in the 8th century and was rebuilt in the 15th century. It became a cathedral in 1888. 




It has a Renaissance facade with four false columns
