Schonbrunn Palace began in the late 17th century as an imperial hunting lodge. It reached its greatest splendour under Empress Maria Theresa in the 18th century and became the principal summer residence of the Habsburg imperial family. The palace and its gardens were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.
