The High Place of Sacrifice: getting there

We came down from the Monastery and began climbing to the High Place of Sacrifice behind Qasr el-Bint.

Tomb of the Roman Soldier
So named because of there is a statue wearing the uniform of a high ranking Roman officer in one of the facade niches.

At the End of the World

We could see Wadi Araba from here. Further in the distance is Aaron's Tomb.

Serious photographer

Aaron's Tomb

This site is venerated by  Christians, Muslims and Jews as the place where Moses' brother Aaron was buried. We have to content ourselves with the view from here as a journey there involves a three hours ride on horseback and a three hours climb to the top.

Towards the End of the World

From the Monastery, we followed the sign to the End of the World.

There, it is!

So I followed

The Monastery

The Monastery

The Monastery was built in the 1st century in honour of the deified king, Obadas I. It is larger than the Treasury but less elaborately decorated.

The interior has a large chamber with an arch-topped niche where the altar once stood.

It came to be known as the Monastery because of the many Christian crosses on its wall. It was perhaps used as a banquets in honour of the deified King Obadas I

We started the climb up to the Monastery after lunch. There are about 800 steps to the top. Needless to say, we took a taxi.

Basin Restaurant

We had our lunch here. This is the only restaurant in Petra.

El-Habis

The  remains of a 12th Century crusader castle lie on the summit of El Habis. We made our way up the hill near the Basin Restaurant.

We stopped here and went for lunch since "habis" means finished in the Malay language
